Often such tools are life savers, allowing more time for the business of writing and keeping readers happy. But at the same time, finding perfect tool for a task is difficult and time consuming. So, we searched internet for best free blogging tools and services for bloggers and summed them up in this post.

To Do's - Before And After Publishing A Post On Blogger

Hi friends, I would like to share my to do list with you which I feel, will drive more traffic as well as improve the SEO of your blog. I'm not sure whether my techniques are right but, I guarantee that you will see a change in the rankings on the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc... If you are aiming to make money by blogging, then I highly recommend you have a to do list for every article you write.

Apart from writing unique content and providing the best about a topic, I suggest you to have a simple to do list as mentioned in this post. I would like to make myself clear with the idea behind this post. It's not any where related to content (say an article with a to do list that tells how to write your article more effectively) - rather, it deals with few simple practices related to coding and spreading your article to make the best of out of your content.

1. EQUIP YOURSELF (OPTIONAL)

The first and foremost thing you need to ensure before you publish a post on your blog is to ask yourself this question - Do I have the right tool for the right job? This includes the images or videos on your post and the tools to optimize them as well - say, for example, Adobe Photoshop. I highly recommend you  to attach at least one image per post because apart from attracting people to read the post, images convey better meaning than the words do.

I'm sure few might contradict with my point about a minimum of one image per post.  To those contradict, just read the following comparison. I would compare a post without image to an editorial page on "The Hindu". Though it is rich with content, only few people have the patience to read them where as, a post with image would be like the first page/sport's page - quickly captures our heart and pushes our mind to read the article.

2. OPTIMIZE YOUR IMAGES (RECOMMENDED)

I'm sure many would do the first step that I mentioned above. That's the basic one! Next, optimizing your images for SEO. This is one of the most important step that every newbie should follow. I know that the pro's would already be doing this. I strongly recommend you to read the following article if do not know how to optimize your images for SEO - 3 Tips To Make Your Images SEO Friendly. It will drive traffic from images and improve your blog rankings on search engines. Forgot to mention that I usually smush my images before I upload them on blogger - to improve the speed of your blogger blog (Speed Up Your Blog - Tips And Tools).

3. OPTIMIZE YOUR LINKS (RECOMMENDED)

This is another important that should be done when you publish on blogger. When you include a link on your post, the default coding on blogger is such that the link opens the new page on the existing page. That is, when people click on the link, they move to new page while your blog becomes inaccessible - it does not open on a new tab/window. It is very important that you make the coding right so that, the visitor is taken to the link on a new tab while your blog still is on another tab. 

For example, I recommended the article about optimizing images for SEO on blogger. Did you notice that when you hit the link, it opened up on new tab/window? It did not open on the same tab. If that happens , then it will disturb with  the continuity in reading the post. So, optimize your links for SEO and readability by adding the following codes.

1. Once you link a page on your post, hit the edit HTML tab on your post editor. You will find the coding for your linked page as follows.

2. Add the following codes to it.

Note: The tag to be included is highlighted in green. More over, don't forget to replace YOUR TITLE with a suitable title for the page you link.

4. FINAL TOUCH (OPTIONAL)

Once you finish writing your article, I suggest you add a line welcoming your readers and encouraging them to comment. Apart from that, let them know they have some benefit when they comment say,  you gain back links for every comment you make. Check whether your tutorials are perfect, coding is correct and the text appears the way you want.

5. SPREAD YOUR ARTICLE (RECOMMENDED)

Try entering to discussions and leave a link to your post. Comment on blogs related to your niche. Spread it via the social media. I recommend you tweet your article once after you complete your post. After tweet, a Facebook like. Then, ping your blog - call the search engines.

You just start out blogging and after that when you really want to become professional, you can choose Wordpress!

But, I would truly say that when I first saw "EAB - www.newbloggingtipz.com" I thought that it's a Wordpress blog run on Thesis theme. But when I came to know that this blog is hosted on blogger with a custom domain, I was amazed. It shows that how customizable Blogspot blogs can be! So you can choose Blogspot as your main blogging platform too. What actually matters - your content and a better design!!!

Blogger has started to introduce many features. The first being - xml driven blog, then a new template editor and now, there is a big change that will soon come into effect. Wordpress and Blogger to post via G-mail


Sometimes, we are extremely busy or on the move and have less time to open our Blogger or Wordpress dashboard to update the blog. In this situation, you can use the option of e-mail posting. Normally, we all have e-mail access in our mobile devices. Fortunately, Wordpress and Blogger both support posting via e-mail. Let's see how to configure this option in both Wordpress and Blogger to post via e-mail.

Blog Posting Via Email


Posting via e-mail works on a simple principle. You send the blog post to a pre-configured address and your blogging CMS periodically checks for any e-mail to process (post). Let's start with Wordpress configuration.

WordPress Configuration


Although, Wordpress has in-built 'Post via e-mail' option in 'Settings -> Writing', but I prefer alternative solution, as it gives more flexibility for formatting and structuring the post.

First of all, we need Postie plugin.

Configuring the plugin

#1 - Upload the plugin to '/wp-content/plugins' folder. Activate the plugin.

#2 - Create two directories in the root directory (installdir) of your blog. Name these directories as 'wp-filez' and 'wp-photos'. Set 777 permissions for both directories. These directories will be used for temporary storage of data during e-mail processing.

#3 - Click 'Settings' and go to 'Configure Postie' page. You will be overwhelmed after seeing array of options on the page. Most of the options are pre-configured and do not require any modification.

#4 - The first option that we need to configure is 'Authorized Addresses'. In the given text box, add the e-mail addresses which you want to be treated as valid mails ids. Postie will treat each e-mail coming from these addresses as valid e-mails from admin. Keep each email address on a single line.

#5 - Now scroll to 'Mailserver Settings'. It is strongly advised to create a fresh e-mail id for posting purposes. Keep id name cryptic, for exp: er45t@yourdomain.com. Postie supports POP3, POP3-SSL, IMAP, IMAP-SSL protocols. Choose the appropriate protocol for your mail server from 'Mail Protocol'. Give the server address in 'Mail Server' and appropriate port number in 'Port'. Specify 'Mail Userid' and 'Mail Password' in respective text boxes.

Note: If you are using POP3-SSL, choose port 995. For POP3, use port number 110. If you are unsure, refer to your mail server documentation.

#6 - Now the plugin is configured and ready for e-mail posting. But, there is something missing. We need to create some mechanism that triggers the e-mail checking procedure so that Postie can do its job. Well, there are two ways for doing that.

Method - 1: If you have access to cron, setup the cron job by the following code.

Keep this entry on a single line. This entry will run the file get_mail.php after every 5 minutes. You can adjust the time interval as per your requirements.

Method - 2: In case you have no access to cron, you can use this method. Paste the following code in 'footer.php'

This code will automatically execute whenever a web page of your blog is opened. In case you want immediate posting after mailing, you can open your blog's homepage to get this code executed.

Post Formatting Options

Here comes the interesting part. Postie supports ample amount of options to structure and format the post, including the post metadata.

Categories and Post Title: While composing the e-mail for posting, you can specify the post title and categories for that post. Simple use this format in 'Subject' line.
Subject: Gen: Wordpress Hacks

This subject line will assign the post to the first category Postie will find, starting from 'Gen'. Needless to say, post title will be 'Wordpress Hacks'.
Subject: [14] [Tip] [Writ] Wordpress Hacks

This subject line will assign the post to 3 categories in one go. First one is the numeric id of the category, second one is the category starting with 'Tip' and so on...
Subject: -14- -Tip- -Writ- Wordpress Hacks

This is one more method to assign multiple categories and post title.

You can also specify, whether comments should be opened, closed or should be opened only for registered users. Use the following code to implement comment activation or deactivation.
comments:0 - (Comments are closed)
comments:1 - (Comments are open)
comments:2 - (Comments are open only for registered users)

If you do not specify any of the above option, comments will be open for all by default.

Postie also supports embedding images in the post via attachments. Refer to READ-ME file supplied with the plugin for all the formatting options.

To post via e-mail, simply compose the post in your e-mail client and send to one of the addresses configured in Postie. Processed e-mails are automatically deleted from the inbox by Postie

Blogger Configuration


Configuring posting via e-mail in blogger is very easy. First, go to 'Settings', then 'Email' sub-tab. Fill in the id in the 'Mail-to-Blogger Address' field.

You can choose either to publish immediately upon receiving the mail or to save it as drafts. To post, simply send the post via e-mail to the address you have configured in your blog's dashboard. Interestingly, blogger can publish your HTML e-mail in original form with ease.
